Size Guide

Find the right size for every room

In short: 6'7" × 9'10" for most living and dining rooms, 5'11" × 8'2" or 6'7" × 9'10" for a bedroom, 5'3" × 7'7" for a small room or office, and 3'3" × 5'3" for an entry or bedside. Four simple rules, one table, and a trick to be sure before you buy.

By room

Living Room

6'7" × 9'10" or 5'11" × 8'2"

The front legs of the sofa and chairs rest on the rug.

Leave 12–18 in (30–45 cm) of floor around it. In a small room, 5'3" × 7'7" sits neatly under the coffee table.

Dining Room

6'7" × 9'10"

The rug extends 24–30 in (60–75 cm) beyond the table on every side.

Chairs stay on the rug when pulled out. With 24 in (60 cm) on every side, 6'7" × 9'10" fits a table up to about 30 × 70 in (76 × 178 cm).

Bedroom

6'7" × 9'10" · 5'11" × 8'2"

Place it under the lower two-thirds of the bed.

Leave 18–24 in (45–60 cm) on each side. Laid across the bed, 6'7" × 9'10" gives that margin to a bed up to 70–82 in (178–208 cm) wide; 5'11" × 8'2", to a bed up to 50–62 in (127–157 cm).

Hallway & Entry

3'3" × 5'3"

Leave 4–6 in (10–15 cm) of floor on each side.

Check that doors open freely.

The painter's tape trick

Before you buy, outline the rug size on your floor with painter's tape and live with it for a day. It is the easiest way to be sure. When in doubt, go bigger: a rug that is too small makes a room feel smaller.
